Choosing a counselor

I remember the first time I stepped into a counselor’s office (I was in middle school, with braces, … and bangs - yikes). The feelings of trepidation, of doubt, and what felt like 1000 questions rattling around in my teenage brain. Walking into the office wasn’t the first step in finding a counselor though. Chances are you may be experiencing similar feelings as I was. Here’s a few key things to keep in mind when searching for a counselor and coach:
  1. Trust your gut: This may sound counterintuitive at first, especially since whatever has led you to counseling may have you doubting yourself, but hear me out. If you don’t feel comfortable or feel that you can have confidence in your counselor and coach, it’s not a good fit. Mental health professionals worth your time will typically give you a 15 minutes consult to let you get to know them a bit before investing in a full session.
  2. Availability and Responsiveness: Perhaps this is a no-brainer for some, but I feel it needs to be said. How quickly do you hear back after putting in an inquiry? If you don’t hear back within 1-2 business days, move on in your search. Does the counselor offer telecounseling, evening appointments, or weekend appointments? The benefits of telecounseling are huge and are such a win-win for both you as the client and the counselor. More on that next week!
  3. Expertise: Does their experience match the challenge that you’re facing? How confident do you feel in talking with the counselor in that first consult? A good counselor will encourage you to at least feel hopeful after meeting with them; an excellent counselor will help you feel hopeful and confident in a collaborative plan to know that you’re going in the right direction to overcome this current challenge and future ones.
Is counseling easy? Is receiving feedback through coaching easy? Not always. Are they worth it? You bet. Nelson Mandela once said, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” As you begin your journey to a stronger life, may you learn to reflect hope!
Be well,
